Is the sound of duplate cutting worse than that of pressed records?
The final sound quality will directly depend on the quality of the music production. Cut records are capable of reproducing the final sound with maximum quality and stereo definition. In terms of volume, pressed records can sound about 2 dBVU louder than cut records.
when we move in the range of 12 dbVU. In any case, if the mix is correct, the same volume can be achieved on a pressed record as on a cut record. The question of volume is especially applicable to electronic music records for clubs/DJs, where this difference
The volume is easily adjustable with the mixer's gain. In urban genres (reggae, hip hop, pop/rock, etc.), where lower volumes are typically used, there is no difference in volume.
Is the appearance of duplate cutting different from that of pressed record?
Our 72", 10", and 12" duplate cutting are made from a virgin record that has been previously pressed. For example, the 12" record has the same appearance as a 180g 12" record, even down to the edge. The only difference is the biscuit, which in the case of duplate cutting is glued to the record, while in the case of pressed records, it is embedded. However, in practice, the difference is minimal.
How is pressed vinyl made?
Pressed vinyl is the typical record of a lifetime. The manufacturing process begins with the creation of the master record (Lacquer), which is obtained by cutting the grooves of the record on a special lathe through a cutting head, which uses a Ruby or Sapphire needle to engrave the grooves. The material of the master record is a soft material (Nitrocellulose). From this master record, through an electrochemical galvanizing process, a template (Stamper) is obtained, which will be later placed in the industrial pressing machine. In this galvanizing process, the master record is discarded and cannot be reused. The press works with the hot plastic (PVC) to make copies of each record, using high pressures and temperatures to work with the plastic.
hot, which allows it to adapt to the information engraved on the mold or stamper. It is an industrial process that involves three main steps:
– Master cut
– Creation of the stamper
– Disc pressing
How is cut vinyl made?
Cut vinyl uses the same technique used to cut the master record for making pressed vinyl. In this case, the record used is made of the same material as the pressed record (PVC), so a diamond stylus is required to perform the cut, as PVC is a harder and more resistant material than the nitrocellulose used in lacquer records. It is a cold process. Once the cut is complete, it is ready for playback and consumption on a conventional turntable, without the need for the entire industrial electroplating and pressing process required for conventional pressed records.
What are the main differences between cut and pressed vinyl?
Cut vinyl is manufactured one by one using a diamond-tipped lathe directly onto PVC (a hard material), reproducing the audio from beginning to end. Therefore, each record is unique and unrepeatable, as the cut is made as many times as copies are needed. In pressed vinyl, the lathe cut is performed only once (master or lacquer record) using a ruby or sapphire stylus on nitrocellulose (a soft material). This master record is then processed to obtain the mold for the subsequent pressing of the copies using PVC, so each copy is identical to the last.
Same material, different manufacturing process. Cut vinyl is handcrafted in our workshop, while pressed vinyl is outsourced and uses an industrial factory process. Artesanos el Groove's work in the pressing manufacturing process focuses on mastering and cutting the master record, although this process can sometimes be outsourced. We also handle proper production specifications, quality control, and planning to ensure the manufacturing process runs smoothly.
What is the maximum lifespan for a cut vinyl record?
The length per side of a cutting record is directly related to the volume of the audio being recorded. For electronic music and DJ records, the following length is recommended:
- 12” ⇨ 12 minutes maximum per side
- 10” ⇨ 8 minutes maximum per side
- 7” ⇨ 4 minutes maximum per side
For genres that do not require as much volume and bass as DJ music, the time can be increased to:
- 12” ⇨ 18 minutes maximum per side
- 10” ⇨ 9 minutes maximum per side
- 7” ⇨ 5 minutes maximum per side
In this format, it is commonly cut at 33 rpm except for the 7” which can be cut at 45 rpm.
What is the maximum lifespan for a pressed vinyl record?
In the case of pressed record, the lacquer is cut with a variable groove spacing controller, allowing for greater utilization of the space. Furthermore, they can be cut at 33 and 45 rpm, with the recommended values in the following table:
| Size | RPM | Optimum Timing | Max. Timing p. side |
| 7″ | 45 | 04:00 | 05:00 – 07:00 |
| 7″ | 33 | 05:00 | 06:00 – 08:00 |
| 10″ | 45 | 07:00 | 09:00 – 12:00 |
| 10″ | 33 | 09:00 | 11:00 – 15:00 |
| 12″ DJ | 33 | 10:00 | 12:00 – 15:00 |
| 12″ DJ | 45 | 08:00 | 09:00 – 12:00 |
| 12″ LP | 45 | 09:00 | 12:00 – 18:00 |
| 12″ LP | 33 | 18:00 | 21:00 – 30:00 |
What is the difference between a Lacquer type master record and a DMM type master record?
The differences between a master on a lacquer support and a master on a DMM are found in the technique and cutting head used, the material of the master record, and the final sound obtained. Being very brief, the lacquer record is softer and less durable, so once the stamper is obtained, it cannot be reused, but it allows to obtain a warmer sound, of greater volume and
bass response compared to the DMM record, which is metallic (copper) and therefore more durable, allowing for multiple stampings and archiving the original master for longer. However, it is more suitable for styles with less bass load, with a brighter and more detailed sound in the high frequencies but with less volume and bass punch. At Artesanos del Groove, we recommend the lacquer-type master, which is what we offer in our editions. For a DMM master, please inquire about availability and pricing, as this is an outsourced process.
What rpm is recommended for records?
For duplate cutting, we recommend cutting at 33 rpm, except for 7" records, which can also be cut at 45 rpm. For pressed records, the optimal rpm should be chosen based on the following table:
| Size | RPM | Optimum Timing | Max. Timing p. side |
| 7″ | 45 | 04:00 | 05:00 – 07:00 |
| 7″ | 33 | 05:00 | 06:00 – 08:00 |
| 10″ | 45 | 07:00 | 09:00 – 12:00 |
| 10″ | 33 | 09:00 | 11:00 – 15:00 |
| 12″ DJ | 33 | 10:00 | 12:00 – 15:00 |
| 12″ DJ | 45 | 08:00 | 09:00 – 12:00 |
| 12″ LP | 45 | 09:00 | 12:00 – 18:00 |
| 12″ LP | 33 | 18:00 | 21:00 – 30:00 |
What is the minimum and maximum number of records in a limited edition cut vinyl?

For analog mastering for vinyl, we need the project mix in a .wav file at the highest possible quality (24-bit and 48KHz recommended) at a volume of -6dB FS on your master track. Keep in mind that if your mix is already limited or over-compressed on the master track, there won't be any headroom.
to work and the work we can do will be limited, affecting the final sound quality.
If my tracks are already digitally mastered, can they be recorded on vinyl?
This point is very important and depends entirely on the process previously carried out, but in most cases, the mastering delivered to us must be adapted for correct transcription to vinyl. Therefore, in these cases, we recommend selecting the "master adaptation" option on the order form.
If you have had professional mastering done in a studio
